Maryland Shines in Greco @ NE Regionals

Three Junior Greco Roman Grapplers moved their way through the Phil Portuese Northeast Regional at Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania and ended the competition as finalists, with one, Tyler Verceles (Headhunters), winning it all and the other two, Wyatt Rossi (Headhunters) and Mason Comegys (Eagle RTC), bringing home silver medals.

Verceles faced off with his clubmate in the finals in the form of Rossi. Verceles is ranked second in Maryland at 120 pounds and No. 29 nationally by High School on SI. Rossi was unranked since this was his first FRECO appearance. It only took Verceles 36 seconds to win his finals match.

Verceles went the distance in his semifinal with Florida’s Koa DeLoach before securing a 4-1 decision. New Jersey’s David Vazquez (Bitetto Trained Wrestling) was handed a 9-1 technical fall loss in the quarterfinals that took almost all of the allotted time before ending at the 5:52 mark. A 9-0 tech in 1:57 got Verceles started on the right foot.

Rossi landed in the finals after No. 7 nationally, Chase Karenbauer (Bad Karma, PA), had to default out of their semifinal match. Prior to that Rossi took care of Team Takedown’s Austin Hayes (No. 2 at 126 pounds) with a 12-4 tech in 3:55.

Comegys is top rated in Greco at 144 pounds and ran into a formidable opponent in previously nationally ranked Jordan Manyette (Exodus Wrestling Club, PA) and was blanked 8-0, 4:28 into the 144-pound Greco Roman Final.

Comegys had a strong opponent in the semifinals but came out on the right side of a 7-6 tally versus Anthony Severino (Savage Wrestling, NY). Comegys stuck the Headhunters’ No. 5 Brendan Tobin in 2:30 in the quarters. An 8-0 tech in 4:28 opened the action for Comegys.

Unlike the 16U slate, which had multiple double medalists, the junior boys placed in one style only. Two more Marylanders found the Greco Podium with Ben Scheiner placing fifth at 138 pounds and The STJ Wrestling Club’s Lazaro Torralba picking up a bronze at 165 pounds.

Both of the Freestyle placers put their work in with the 157-pounders and but did not rekindle their rivalry from the high school season as Capital Wrestling Club’s No. 1 Brooklyn Pickett earned a third-place finish, while Zane Leitzel came in sixth. They did not meet but shared New Jersey’s Michael Craft and Pennsylvania’s No. 30 James Whitbred as common opponents.

Pickett is ranked 28th in the country at 165 pounds by High School on SI following his U.S. Open appearance at the higher weight but came back down to 157 for the Northeast Regional. Pickett pinned Craft (Seagull Wrestling Club) 2:16 into the bronze bout and handed Whitbred a 12-3 loss in the consolation semis.

Pickett lost a semifinal heartbreaker to No. 17 in the nation, Gabe Ballard (LVWC, PA), 12-11. Craft was shutout in the quarters, 10-0, and Shea Morris was also discarded with a 10-0 tech along with two other tech falls to begin the tournament.

Leitzel succumbed to Whitbred in their placement battle, 12-2 (4:45) after edging Whitbred, 8-7, in the quarters. No. 10 at 150, Michael Turi (Wyoming Seminary) kicked Leitzel to the consolation rounds where he met, and lost to Craft, 13-2.
