MAWA Results: Howard High School

One more MAWA District Tournament was held last weekend at Howard High School. There was no girls’ division at this affair, so well will focus on the Elite and Advanced Divisions that house the high school age grapplers. The top four move on to the South Region at the Wicomico Civic Center on April 12th and 13th.

The wrestlers did not represent their high school at this event, some were unattached, and some were affiliated with a wrestling club. Fredderick County had five champions across the two divisions, with three in the Elite Ranks.

State runner-up, No. 7 Vincent Corso (Urbana) posted an 11-2 major decision of Hammond’s Jaden Asaah-Timothy in the Elite 189lb final. Asaah-Timothy upset Archbishop Curley’s state placer, No. 9 Bailen Boutz of the Friar Wrestling Club, 9-4, in the semis. Middletown’s Xavier Ford claimed the 135lb title with a 12-4 major decision against McDonogh’s Reid Swirnow.

The final Elite Champ, Amir Bakari (111), hails from Frederick, who also crowned an Advanced Champion. Bakari stuck Natalie Handy of Pennsylvania in 56 seconds. Theo Dimitriou was Frederick’s golden boy in the Advanced slate, putting a 12-0 major on the final line of the 189lb bracket. Catoctin’s Ashton Thompson (No. 17 at 138 and repping Alliance WC) claimed the 140lb Advanced crown with a 15-0 technical fall of Patterson Mill’s Ashton Winter (Mavericks Wrestling).

Montgomery County was next in the title count with three, two in the Elite Brackets, Seneca Valley’s Isaiah Brewster (No. 8 at 113) and Quince Orchard’s Harrison Spadoni (No. 25 at 120). Brewster received the 118lb gold on a forfeit by Owings Mills’ DJ Toscano. Spadoni decked Urbana’s Gabe Helmen (No. 18 at 113) in 3:55 to claim the crown at 125. The 125lb Advanced title went to Walt Whitman’s Jabasie Trice (Capital Wrestling) (No. 12 at 113) after he won an overtime bout with Catonsville’s Owen Shelley (Vipers) (No. 25 at 113), 7-4.

Howard County had one champion in each age group with Glenelg’s Isaac Choi planting Brunswick’s Jake O’Connor (Warhawks) 50 seconds into their 140lb Elite Final. In a battle of ranked 113lbers at 120, No. 24 Dom Esposito (Long Reach) stuck No. 19 Carter Mullen (Brunswick/Warhawks), 2:57.

The Bayside Conference brought two Advanced titlists back to the Eastern Shore in Queen Anne’s Alex McDonald (130) and North Caroline’s Michael Dyke (160). Repping UQA Lions, McDonald blanked Tuscarora’s Ryan Wheeler, 6-0, in his final. Dyke (Henlopen Hammers) beat Virginia’s Thomas Clodfelter, 7-2, for his gold.

Four private school wrestlers won championships, three on the Elite side. The most noteworthy was Good Counsel’s No. 18 Bryton Brown edging No. 17 Barry Ituka (Gaithersburg) for the heavyweight title. Curley’s Oscar Davis (Friar WC, No. 11 at 138) pinned Westminster’s Ethan DeGalicia, 1:54, in the 145lb final.

Bishop McNamara’s Rhonin Swenson (No. 10 at 165) won the 171lb bracket with an 11-2 major of West Virginia’s Andrew Thompson. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel’s Samara Wolokolie (No. 23 at 106) was awarded the 110lb Advanced crown on a bye as he was the lone participant at his weight.

Lackey’s William Chism (No. 18 at 150) took on McDonogh’s Cole Genua in the Elite 160lb final. Genua, who was all the way up from 138, where he is ranked 12th, lost a 12-6 decision to Chism. Glen Burnie’s Noah Obinna (No. 20 at 144) teched Frederick’s John Mott, 19-2, for the 152lb glory. The final Elite champ from Maryland, Patrick Flynn, wrestled for the South Bowie Boys and Girls Club and authored a 7-3 win in the 220lb final with Catonsville’s Joshua Agen-Davis.

The last two Advanced champs from Maryland were Gavin Jones (Bel Air, 100) and Braxton Bohinc (Legend Wrestling, 135). Jones beat second place finisher Evan Swirnow (McDonogh), 13-7, in round robin action. Bohin won bf fall in his final with Glenelg’s Mason Dalton (HeadHunters), 2:31.

Maryland had three additional silver medalists in the Advanced portion, Landon Clark (Laurel Lions WC, 105), Curley’s Paul Boettcher (145, Friar WC), and Dulaney’s Ashton Finch (152). Clark was pinned by Virginia’s Joseph Savage, 1:18. Boettcher and Finch lost to Berkley Springs, West Virginia grapplers, Kowen Proctor (fall 1:15) and Kaden Proctor (8-1), respectively.
