MSWA FS/GR State Championships (Boys Edition!)

The Maryland State Wrestling Association’s Freestyle and Greco Roman state tournament was held on May 17th at Loyola-Blakefield. Champions were crowned across all age groups and genders. This installment will focus on the high school divisions for the Boys, 16U and 19U. Greco was completed in the morning with Freestyle following in the afternoon. Unless otherwise noted, the brackets were run in a round robin manner with no official finals match.

19U

Grapplers from Montgomery County accounted for three of the Freestyle golds, Bullis’ top rated stars Salah Tsarni (190) and Noah Tucker (175), along with Bethesda-Chevy Chase’s Felipe Jacome Pinargote (126).

Tsarni is a two-time state champion that is ranked sixth in the country at 175 pounds by High School on SI that competed for the Capital Wrestling Club here as did Tucker. Tsarni won on a forfeit from the runner-up from Watkins Mill, Ziyaudy Khozhugov (CWC), who was fifth at the 4A/3A state tournament. In Greco, the two flipped that script with Khozhugov winning by forfeit.

Tucker finished third at the MIS Tournament then avenged that loss at National Preps to take the state’s number one ranking at 157 pounds. To win the Freestyle crown, Tucker beat Gilman’s 175-pound state champion, Arthur Konschak, by technical fall, 10-0, and fourth place MIS state placer Josh Taylor of Archbishop Spalding, 12-0. Taylor beat Konschak, 11-1, to secure a silver medal here. Tucker pinned Konschak in 1:11 for the Greco gold.

Jacome Pinargote was in one of the rare, bracketed weights and reached the finals after sticking Eleanor Roosevelt’s Olu Faniyi, 1:53. Jacome Pinargote won by default with private school’s state champion Jayden Jackson (Loyola) in the finals. Jackson had just beaten two-time 4A/3A state champ Solomon Randall (Walt Whitman) in the semifinals, 14-8. Randall placed third beating MIS third-place finisher Becket Geary of St. Mary’s Ryken 10-0, twice, in the consolation finals and the quarterfinals. Jackson won the 132-pound Greco title over Rising Sun’s Mason Long, 10-0.

St. Mary’s Ryken did see two of its ranks claim top honors in the freestyle competition, Evan Boblits (150) and Evan Gavin (215-HWT), both of whom were MIS state champs too.

Boblits is ranked 26th in the nation and captured his gold on a 10-0 tech of 4A/3A state runner-up, Zahid Shujaee (Blake). Boblits’ brackets in both styles were of the traditional fashion with Boblits handling Loyola’s Josh Hale (3rd at MIS states), 10-0, in the semis. Shujaee teched Linganore’s Cash Wheat, 10-0. Wheat defeated Hale, 18-9, to take third.

Boblits Greco bracket involved a lot of the same characters with the future Midshipmen blanking South Carroll’s 2A/1A state champ Evan Owen, 10-0, in the finals and beating Wheat, 10-0, in the semis. Owen downed Hale, 10-0. Wheat once again took care of Hale, this time, 12-2.

Gavin’s freestyle bracket unfolded in a normal manner with him taking out Good Counsel’s George Tate, 14-4, in the finals. Tate, who was fourth at the private schools’ states, beat 2A/1A third-place finisher Adam Keever (Hereford), 10-4, in the semis and former DeMatha grappler, Zachary Richards, 12-7, in the quarters. Richards beat Keever for third, 10-2. Keever earned the top spot on the Greco podium by handling Tate, 11-1, and Gavin, 12-2. Tate decked Gavin in their encounter to land in second place.

Stephen Decatur’s three-time 2A/1A state champion and national honorable mention, Elijah Collick, doubled down on titles all the way up at 138 pounds. Both victories came against Eastern Tech’s two-time 2A/1A state placer, Chase Ullmann. In freestyle, Collick took it with a 10-0 tech. It was a bit closer in Greco, ending with a 6-1 tally.

Eleanor Roosevelt produced two double champions, 4A/3A state champ Austin Hayes (106-120) and Leo Foreman (157), who was third at the public-school states. Hayes beat the same guy twice in Broadneck’s Miguel E. Caban. The freestyle win was 13-2 in round robin competition. The Greco glory came in a best of three series, with Hayes winning two straight, by fall in :27 and 7-4. Foreman took out McDonogh’s Cole Genua (5th at MIS states) 10-0 for the top spot in both disciplines.

Mt. S. Joseph’s state runner-up and two-time MIS placer, Tyler Stephens (144), defeated a wrestler, Isisah Womack, who spent a season at Saint Frances Academy before returning back to Richard Montgomery and winning a 4A/3A state gold, 17-6 in Freestyle and 13-2 in Greco Roman to claim dual MSWA crowns.

Oakland Mills’ Raul Rodriguez placed second at the 4A/3A states this year and picked up two165-pound MSWA state golds with a 14-1 freestyle win over Patapsco’s Alex Hynes (5th 2A/1A states) and a 10-0 Greco tech of Edgewood’s Jamil Vann.

16U

One of the stars of the 16U competition was Poly’s Miles Molina who won titles in both types of engagement. Molina’s freestyle bracket unfurled in typical style with him picking up a 14-3 semifinal win over South Carroll’s Jake Simione (3rd in 2A/1A states). Molina, who placed fifth on the 4A/3A side of states, edged William McMurtrie (NW Elite), 6-5, in the finals. Molina beat Simione 14-4 in Greco round robin action.

Mt. St. Joe’s fourth-place state finisher Connor Allison captured the freestyle 144-150-pound and Greco 138-pound golds. The Freestyle variety came by pinning KeShon Bryant (CH Flowers) in 1:23. The Greco one came by a 10-0 tech of McDonogh’s Mason Comegy.

Comegy, who was a state silver medalist, earned the 138-pound freestyle gold medal with a 6-2 decision of Loyola’s Evan Jackson, who placed seventh at MIS states. Bryant planted Cyrus Felton of Potomac in 3:45 to win the 150-pound Greco gold.

Two Montgomery County public schoolers came in first in Freestyle, Jabasie Trice (Walt Whitman, 126) and Zoya Wexler (Poolesville, 165-175). Trice, who was sixth at the 4A/3A states, placed a 10-0 tech on Annapolis’ Blake Gezelle. Wexler did not place at the public-school states but pinned MIS states fourth place finisher Izaac Robertucci (Calvert Hall), 1:29. Wexler also defeated Northwest’s Logan Brown, 5-4. Brown came back for third.

Georgetown Prep’s Kenson Noel-3 won a close one with Loyola’s Brendan Tobin, 14-12, to win the 132-pound Greco championship. Poly had a Greco champ with Conner Armwood at 126 pounds. Armwood won a best-of-three affair with Theo Martin Jr. (MD Summer WL), 10-0 and 12-2.

The remaining 16U Champions are still in middle school.

Nathan Matthis, who has starred at the Kids’ Nationals in recent years, picked up a humungous win over Loyola’s Tyler Verceles, 4-3. Verceles won a state title and is a national honorable mention entry in High School on SI’s national report. Verceles beat second place Evan Durand (Headhunters), 8-4, but defaulted/forfeited to fifth place. Matthis beat Durand, 11-1. In Freestyle, Matthis beat Armwood and Durand, 10-0.

Legend Wrestling’s Braxton Bohinc beat three high school guys to take the 132-pound wall chart home. Putting up a 6-0 win over Noel-3, 2-2 against Tobin, and 10-0 versus Havre de Grace’s Vincent Kirby. Noel-3 pinned Tobin, :57, to claim second. Max Solis (Headhunters) pocketed the 165-175-pound Greco title with a 1:08 fall of Capital Wrestling Club’s Luke Monaco and came in fourth in Freestyle.
