MSWA: South Qualifier 16U Results

The Maryland State Wrestling Association’s second FRECO Tournament of the spring occurred during the last weekend of April at Archbishop Spalding High School. It was just about an entirely new field than the one that took to the mats at Edgewood.

Four 16U wrestlers secured crowns in each style (Freestyle and Greco Roman) – Jacob Wills (Headhunters), Ryker Keeney (Coco), Zach Landis (Coco), and Owen Stewart (Mavericks Wrestling).

Wills was the Headhunters’ sole champ in the 16U brackets, and he did so at 106 pounds by beating the same second place guy in both styles, Virginia’s Mark French. Wills’ FS competition was a round robin affair where he beat French, 6-1. Their Greco battle was a best of three scenario with Wills sweeping the Virginian, by fall in 3:11 and 8-5.

Keeney followed the same pattern at 150/157 pounds, defeating Rampage Wrestling’s Ayden Leader in a round robin FS gauntlet, where he decked Leader in 2:37, and swept two straight with technical falls in their Greco Final, 11-2 (2:33) and 9-1 (3:31).

Landis met different dudes for his golds and took out Jacob Endzel in FS by winning two in a row on tech falls, 11-1 (1:44) and 15-4 (2:38) at 190/215 pounds. Landis’ Greco weight was 175/190, and he won that round robin bracket with a 9-0 tech in 48 seconds of second place finisher John Snyder.

Stewart handled Endzel in both of his title runs, pinning his rival in 38 seconds during round robin FS action and 1:15 in Greco. Stewart was joined in victory by his clubmate, Rocco Batista-Sestito, who won the 88-pound FS crown uncontested with a bye.

The host school’s club is the Cavalier Wrestling Club and three of their reps captured Freestyle golds, Lane Gowl (126 pounds), William Abboud (132) and Isaac Cicchetti (144).

Gowl’s weight was one of the few that was ran win a typical bracketed format and he reached the finals to face off with Rampage Wrestling’s Braidyn Taby, whom he disposed of with a 10-0 tech fall in 1:08. Abboud’s round robin voyage included a blanking of Maryland Predators’ Ethan Swank, 10-0 in 1:21. Cicchetti got down in a best of three with Beat the Streets’ Amir Felton and teched his rival with 10-0 tallies each time in 47 seconds and 1:47.

The finals Freestyle title was acquired at the 165/175-pound weight after Soshiant Ahanj-Elias (Capital Wrestling Club) won a round robin bracket with a 10-2 win over Diamond Fish’s Jacob Gough.

The last three Greco champs were Taby, Endzel, and Ryan Scott (Milford Mill Wrestling). Taby reversed his FS loss to Gowl with a 5-1 decision. Endzel was awarded the 215-pound title on a bye. Scott beat Andrew Smuda (Mavericks Wrestling Club) twice with an 8-0 tech in 1:16 and then 8-1.
