RESULTS: MSWA @ Spalding (16U)

Last Sunday, April 13th, the MSWA held their second Freestyle and Greco Roman Open Tournaments at Archbishop Spalding. The third and final open is slated for this weekend (April 19th) at Queen Anne’s High School. These culminate in the Freco state tournament at Loyola-Blakefield on May 17th.

This recap will focus on the 16U Boys’ exploits. There were some Team Trials matches held in conjunction with the Open portion. Some wrestlers were unattached, some represented clubs - for consistency, we will use their high school if it is known.

Like the 19U report, we will begin this one with the Team Trial matches. There were three contests in Freestyle with Loyola’s Tyler Verceles (No. 1 at 106) teching No. 4 at 106, Charlie Mutschler (Spalding), at 115. At 140, McDonogh’s Mason Comegys (No. 6 at 132) posted a tech of Spalding’s William McDonough, 10-0. Conner Armwood from Poly beat Middle School MSWA state runner-up, Evan Durand (Headhunters), 6-2.

Two of those wrestlers won their Greco Team Trials bouts, Armwood and Comegys. Armwood again squared off with Durand, resulting in an 8-4 win. Comegys also defeated the same foe, McDonough, 9-0. Both beat Spalding’s Quentin Bailey (No. 5 at 120). Comegys did it with an 8-0 tally and McDonough used an 11-3 count.

Three of the 16U FS matches featured state ranked wrestlers placing first and second. An absolute upset happened at 113 when Poly’s Miles Molina (No. 14 at 106) wo by tech over South Carroll’s Jake Simione (No. 9 at106). An upset by numbers occurred at the 165-175 stop as Parkdale’s Lazaro Torralba (No. 14 at 165) came out ahead of Calvert Hall’s Izaac Robertucci (No. 9 at 175), 14-2.

The 126lb match with Walt Whitman’s Jabasi Trice (No. 12 at 113) and Archbishop Curley’s Evan Kaliakoudas (No. 15 at 113) went as the ranking suggested with Trice winning 12-0.

Two other ranked Marylanders grabbed FS crowns, Urbana’s No. 12 Damian DuChez (94-106) and Spalding’s Quentin Bailey (No. 5 at 12) receiving a forfeit from Mt. St. Joseph’s Connor Allison (No. 6 at 150) for the 144lb title. DuChez handled a middle schooler from West Virginia, Archer White (EP Rattlers), 10-0 and then received a forfeit from White.

At 138, Georgetown Prep’s Kenson Noel won by fall, 3:04, and 10-4, in a best of three meeting with Leonardtown’s Ethan Cronkright. Headhunters’ Kids All-American, Nathan Matthis used a 10-0 tech to defeat Armwood at 120lbs.

Noel pinned Cronkright in GR round robin action in 32 seconds for the 132-138 gold. Matthis showed he is ready to start beating standout high school kids as he got by Sparrows Point’s Wyatt Rossi (No. 6 at 106), 3-1. Rossi was a 2A/1A state champion this year. Torralba blanked Oakland Mills’ Aiden York, 8-0 and 11-0, at 165-175.

Allison won the 144lb bracket with a 10-0 tech of Loyola’s Evan Jackson (No. 20 at 132). The last two championships were won by FS runners-up as Kaliakoudas (126) downed Durand, 10-1, and Simione (113) swept John Michael Clark (Oakland Mills), 8-0 and 11-0.
