South Carroll is hungry for states ... for victory

Sixth- and ninth-ranked seniors Manny Rodrigues (215) and Angelo Marchany (150) earned their 100th career wins during third-ranked South Carroll’s tr-meet victories over sixth-ranked Middletown and Urbana on Wednesday night.

The Cavaliers hammered Middletown, 52-20, followed by a 59-14 rout of Urbana, against which Rodrigues and Marchany earned their milestone wins. Rodrigues is 21-3 on the season and 100-12 for his career, and Marchany is 19-5 for the season and 100-26 for his career.

Not only did Marchany earn his 100th career victory with a 20-second fall against the Hawks’ Thomas Alvarez, but he preceded that with a shocking, 70-second fall against the Knight’s third-ranked senior Alex DeVriendt, who has finished third once and second twice at the Class 2A-1A state tournament.

“Angelo had a huge win yesterday against highly ranked state runner-up Alex DeVriendt,” said coach Bryan Hamper, who was named Class 1A Coach Of The Year by Legacy Wrestling last season and already has cemented his legacy among the state's all-team greats. “Wins like this and the ones last week at Virginia duals are huge right now as he prepares to make a postseason run at a state title.”

Rodrigues also had a pair of pins comprising those in 56 seconds and in 3:31, the latter against the Knights’ Aidan Brundle.

“Manny is an extremely gifted athlete, and he can pin from every position. We are really excited about Manny’s preparation for the postseason,” Hamper said. “Manny unfortunately lost last season due to injury but has really stepped up as a senior leader for our team.”

Rodrigues had not wrestled since his sophomore season, when he won Carroll County and Class 2A-1A North Region crowns before placing second at Class 2A-1A states.

“I got my 100th win against Urbana in the second match, and it’s definitely something that I’ll cherish for a long time,” said Rodrigues, who had a torn ACL and meniscus in his right leg. “It was a great feeling to be hitting 100 wins after all of the adversity I went through with the surgery and rehab over the past year. All of the hard work that I put in to get back into action has paid off.”

The Cavaliers’ fourth-ranked state champion junior Grayson Barnhill (113) earned falls in 37 and 47 seconds over the Knights’ 18th-ranked Liam Soe and the Hawks’ 19th-ranked junior Gabe Hellman.

Fifth-ranked state champion junior Landon Hamper (190), Bryan’s son, earned an 18-3 technical fall against the Knights before winning a 5-4 decision over the Hawks’ third-ranked senior Vince Corso, who is in pursuit of his fourth straight Frederick County title and has placed fourth at both regions and Class 4A-3A states.

“Landon had an opportunity to avenge a loss to Vince Corso from last year, and they had a great match. It was very exciting, and both got to some great scrambles,” Bryan Hamper said. “Those are the type of matches you ask for in January for us to see where we are. Landon came out on top of this one, but it was a great match and I’m sure both kids are better because of having it. We want tough matches; that’s our goal with the schedule we put together for the team.”

Top-ranked sophomore Eli Gabrielson (120) had an 86-second fall against the Hawks and an 18-2 technical fall against the Knights. A transfer from St. Mary’s Ryken in St. Mary’s County, Gabrielson earned last year’s Washington Catholic Athletic Conference crown, finished second in the Maryland Private Schools State tournament, and fourth at National Preps.

Second-ranked two-time state champion junior Jo Jo Gigliotti (144) earned a 44-second pin and a 21-5 technical fall. Gigilotti was named last season’s Middleweight Wrestler of The Year by Legacy Wrestling.

Second-ranked senior Evan Owen (138) scored a 19-3 technical fall against the Knight’s Samuel Sword, but did not wrestle against the Hawks. Owen is a three-time county and regional champion and was a state runner-up for the second straight year last season after having placed fourth as a freshman.

Also winning twice were the Cavalier’s 13th-ranked sophomore Brody Henry (126) with a technical fall and a major decision, and 13th-ranked sophomore Davy Snyder (157) with a technical fall and a 15-8 decision over the Knight’s 23rd-ranked senior Henry Graham.

Henry and Snyder were among the Cavaliers’ school-record-tying eight Carroll County champions and milestone 10 finalists last season as South Carroll won its fourth straight county tournament crown.

A 2001 South Carroll graduate, Hamper was twice a state champion and twice placed fourth at the states. Hamper coached his alma mater to Class 2A-1A state tournament titles in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 before the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association

ceased scoring the state tournament in 2018.

Hamper has personally coached 28 of the Cavalier’s Maryland public school-leading 41 individual state champion wrestlers. Second behind the Cavaliers with 36 individual champions apiece are Old Mill of Anne Arundel County and Owings Mills of Baltimore County.

In fact, Hamper has coached more individual champions than Montgomery County power Damascus with 26.

The Cavaliers boast four returning Class 2A-1A state champions and three runners-up among 10 state place-winners, nine who are returning conference or Carroll County champions, and eight regional title-winners.

Last year’s Cavaliers (27-0) earned their third straight Class 1A state duals crown and their 34th consecutive dual meet victory. South Carroll finished at 33-1 in 2022-2023, winning that crown with a 46-30 triumph over a Northern-Garrett County Huskies squad which entered at 25-0.

The title-winning effort of 2023 marked the Cavaliers’ seventh straight dual meet victory following a 36-25 loss on Feb. 2, 2023 to top-ranked private school power Mount St. Joseph.

South Carroll, last year, also crowned six Class 2A-1A North Regional champions among eight finalists, and tied their record of four individual state champions, all of whom were sophomores.

The Cavaliers also earned a school record-tying eight individual Carroll County titles among a milestone 10 finalists in winning their program's fourth straight Carroll County Tournament crown. South Carroll’s County tournament performance came a week after earning their third straight Class 1A state duals crown at North Point High representing their 34th consecutive dual meet victory.

Coached by Andrew Winfield, the 2022-2023 squad also received county titles from eventual three-time state champions Mike Pizzuto (145) and A.J. Rodrigues (160), two-time state title-winner Gage Owen (138), and state champ Rylan Moose (182) -- all of whom won their third consecutive county crowns. Then-sophomore Manny Rodrigues (195) was the eighth to win a county championship in 2022-2023.

The Cavaliers return 10 returning state place-winners, four state champions and three runners-up. Gigiliotti was a freshman, and Owen, a sophomore on the Cavaliers’ 2022-2023 squad. Owen and Gigliotti are among the Cavalier’s nine returning conference or county champions and eight regional title-winners from last season.
