Shoutouts to Anne Vance & Jeff Smith for the photos!
Eastern Tech crowned fifth-ranked senior Arianna King (190), seventh-ranked junior London Smith (145), eighth-ranked senior Hannah Hickman (155), 10th-ranked junior Kyrah Proctor (140) and Natalie Vance (100) among six finalists and nine wrestlers who finished within the top four of their weight classes last Friday to win their own Maverick Classic Female Invitational tournament.
Finishing second was Mackenzie Jones (135), with Mya Mullineaux (105) being third, and Genevieve Gamero (110) and Allison Bateman (130) both fourth as the Mavericks (158 points) overwhelmed runner-up Leonardtown (97), whose lone champion was eighth-ranked sophomore Darielle Wood (125).
King followed a 41-second pin with a pair of tough decisions over Glen Burnie’s second-ranked senior Alexis Ogundipe and Hereford’s fourth-ranked Mia Stevenson by scores of 3-1 and 7-5 in their semifinal and finals bouts.
Smith scored consecutive falls in 3:29 of her semifinal over fifth-ranked Patapsco senior Gianna Guarnera and 1:48 of her title match over sixth-ranked Patterson Mill junior Aubrey Goble.
“London Smith has wrestled Gianna from Patapsco I believe four or five times at this point,” said Mavericks’ coach Rob Sullivan, who graduated from Eastern Tech in 2001 as a Baltimore County champion.
“Between the regular season and out of season she's won every time. The match usually starts tough, but London is a constant worker in a match she never lets up. Even when she's down, you can count on her to stay in it.”
A year ago, Smith had a record of 12-1, and Hickman, one of 14-2 before each was injured in December and February respectively, according to Sullivan.
“Last season London Smith was pulling upsets every week. Then during Christmas break practices she injured her shoulder,” Sullivan said. “So, her season got cut short, but I'm very happy that she has come back with the same fire to start off the season back to where she left off.”
Proctor used pins in 19 and 24 seconds to reach the finals, where she ground out a 4-3 decision over fifth-ranked sophomore Grace Reilly of Bel Air.
“Kyrah Proctor is never out of a match. She always looks like she came to get into a brawl. She is very good at giving me mini heart attacks,” Sullivan said. “She kept it close with the Bel-Air wrestler but she never gave up. Even in the room, I am seeing a new level of effort from her. I'm really excited to see what she can accomplish.”
Hickman escalated her pin tenacity over the course of three bouts comprising falls in 1:45, 26 and 18 seconds, the latter in her finals match with Angelina Devitt-Tapia of Blake High.
Jones is a returning Baltimore County champion, and both King and Proctor are returning county and regional runners-up.
Vance used a 51-second pin to reach the finals, where her 15-4 major decision defeated Leonardtown’s Mia Samuel.
“Vance has junior league experience,” Sullivan said. “This girl is going to pull some big upsets this year.”
Wood registered consecutive pins in 3:09 and 5:08, with the last being against Hereford’s Annie Stutz in their title match.
Second-ranked two-time state champion junior Madison Birth (115) of Bel Air scored pins in 82 and 45 seconds before winning her title match by 18-1 technical fall over Calvert’s Serenity Sowers.
Birth improved her record on the year to 5-0 with four pins and one technical fall, and her co-ed career mark to 61-23 after having transferred from Havre de Grace.
Birth is continuing a family legacy at Bel Air, where her father, Scott, was a state champion for the Bobcats as a senior in 1992, and her uncle, Chris, a state champion for Bel Air in 1989 before graduating in 1990.
Patterson Mill crowned two champions in senior Sarah Alkhatib (110) and sophomore Kylie Buehler (135), each of whom is ranked fourth.
Alkhatib used a 45-second pin to reach her title bout, where she gutted out a 12-8 decision over Patapsco’s Sofia Zhibri.
Buehler pinned four opponents comprising those in 27 and 49 seconds to go with another in 2:44 before decking Jones in 1:51 of their finals bout.
Other champions were fifth- ranked senior Madison Drumwright (235) of Milford Mill, sixth-ranked senior Samatha Potter (130) of Calvert, eighth-ranked junior Julia Abel (105) of Hereford, ninth-ranked sophomore Yoselyn Ventura (120) of Blake and Jasmine Brock (120) of Kenwood.
Drumwright used a fall in 4:27 to reach her finals match with sixth-ranked junior Zoey Lam of Kenwood, whom she overcame with a 5-1 decision.
Potter dominated her opposition with consecutive pins in 27m 73 and 31 seconds, the last against championship rival Amani McCleandon of Milford Mill.
Abel nailed down a 67-fall in her semifinal before edging Glen Burnie’s fourth-ranked sophomore Pashince Gregory, 7-5, in their title match.
Ventura earned pins in 73 and 78 seconds, ending with that against Catonsville’s Brenna Shelley in their championship bout.
Brock had an easier time in her semifinals bout with a 28-second pin before taking 3:11 to finish off title match opponent, Mame Gueye, of Milford Mill.
