Northern-Garrett senior Nate Wilhelm pinned three opponents before winning his 121-pound title bout, 7-3, over Cash Diehl of runner-up Clearfield in this weekend’s 35th annual Thomas Automotive Wrestling Tournament at Bedford High in Bedford, Pennsylvania. Wilhelm was among the eighth-place Huskies’ six wrestlers who finished within the top seven of their weight classes. Junior Nick Riley (172) placed third, sophomore Devon Opel (127) and juniors Matthew Beitzel (107) and Caleb Brennemen (145) were fifth, and freshman Mason Glotfelty (114) was seventh for the Huskies.
Clearfield (183.5 points) was a runner-up to Chestnut Ridge (191), which claimed its 10th straight team championship in the 34-team event.
“Nate wrestled like a dawg this weekend. There was some seriously good competition in this tournament, and this was great for us,” said Huskies’ coach Casey Kamp, who placed third as a freshman and won three consecutive Class 2A-1A state titles before graduating from Northern-Garrett in 2006. “Nate really wrestled tough, pinning his way into the finals to face Cash Diehl. Diehl had won this tournament last year at 114 pounds, but Nate completely dominated all phases of their finals match. This is the best that Nate’s ever wrestled. I’m a proud coach.”
Ranked eighth by Legacy Wrestling at 126 pounds, Wilhelm improved his record to 25-3 with 15 pins, having suffered all three losses at 132 pounds.
Wilhelm scored a 90-second fall against his semifinal opponent, Wyatt Clouse of Northern Bedford County, who finished fourth.
“I pinned all of the guys except for Cash Diehl in my finals match,” Wilhelm said. “My performance was good because I finished fifth here as a junior last year after being pinned in the finals as a sophomore.”
Wilhelm has finished second and third at the Class 2A-1A state tournament during the past two seasons. Wilhelm owns victories this year over a pair of state champions, one being North Marion’s Noah Hess of West Virginia and the other being Elijah Collick of Stephen Decatur.
Ranked second at 113 pounds, Collick was unbeaten before losing to Willhelm, 4-2. A year ago, Wilhelm finished third at states behind Collick after South Carroll’s Grayson Barnhill pinned him in 76 seconds of their semifinal bout and lost his title bout to Collick, 5-3. As a freshman, Wilhelm was runner-up to Rising Sun’s Tyler Garvin, a senior two-time state champion who is ranked No. 1 at 120 pounds and remains undefeated over the course of his career.
Riley won his third-place bout by fall in 3:27 over Grant Fisher of Berlin Brothers Valley.
In their fifth-place bouts, Beitzel pinned Aiden Replogle of Northern Bedford County in 2:25, Opel won a 5-1 decision over Deshonn Valentine of Somerset, and Brenneman earned a 7-2 decision over Ty Aveni of Clearfield.
Glotfelty won a 4-0 decision over Carter Thomas of Burrell for seventh place.
