MSWA: The 19U Edgewood Recap!

The first MSWA Freestyle and Greco Roman Qualifier was held over the weekend at Edgewood High School with ages ranging from 8U to 19U High Schoolers. The Olympic Styles or “Freco” as some call it, is not for everyone, and this country differs from the others in that the dominant form of competition is Folkstyle all the way up through the collegiate level.

Therefore, for most, switching styles for a few months a year holds little appeal. Since Freestyle is mostly on your feet, we feel that more should embrace at the very least, Freestyle, and view it as an opportunity to get better on your feet, which is incredibly valuable in the current three-point takedown climate.

You have nothing to lose and so much to gain by trying these styles on for fit. You may actually dig it.

The 19U field at the event was similar across both disciplines with two Marylanders winning titles in each style, Cash Wheat (Capital Wrestling Club) and Giuseppe DiMonte (Eagle RTC). Some of the weights were done in round robin style, so when we refer to “final” in some of the weights, it’s when the first and second place wrestlers met.

Wheat was at 165 pounds in each bracket and decked the same adversary in each as Red Rock Wrestling Club’s Dominick Rossi was dropped in 2:17 in Freestyle and just 31 seconds in Greco Roman.

DiMonte was in a best of three meeting with Annapolis’ Christian Snavely in the 190-pound Freestyle final, pinning his foe twice in 1:48 and 1:24. DiMonte was awarded the Greco Gold as an unopposed grappler, who rode a bye to the top.

Three who won FS gold ended with Greco silver, Headhunters’ Brendan Tobin, plus Eagle RTC’s Nicolas Toung and Cole Genua.

Toung was at 150 pounds on each side and beat Capital Wrestling Club’s Niko Rakis, 14-9, in the FS Final, then fell to Headhunters’ Connor Allison in GR, 12-9. Genua decked the Outsiders’ Brayden Lobdell in 4:20 and was the one getting stuck in Greco by Vincent Kirby in 1:46.

Tobin took care over The Compound’s Kenson Noel III with a 14-3 Freestyle tech in 5:07. The two switched positions on the Greco podium after Noel flattened Tobin in 2:44.

The other titles were gained by strangers from the foreign lands of Delaware and Virginia. Delaware’s titlist was Austin Guerrieri, who handled Virginia’s Tomas Melendez in the 132-pound freestyle bracket and 120/132 GR slate. Virginia’s Jack Dunn won a best of three tussle with Grindstone Wrestling Club’s Zach Welch in two straight.
