The 16U Battle @ Edgewood

Saturday’s MSWA Freestyle and Greco Roman Qualifier gave our 16U contestants their first opportunity to apply the Olympic Styles in combat this year. Edgewood High School was the setting for a swath of youngsters trying their hand at something new.

Given we now live in a world where a takedown is worth three points and the majority of the wrestling in the USA happens in the Folkstyle realm, you are passing up a golden opportunity to improve on your feet if you bypass Freestyle. More of these events are coming, take the time to improve, you have got nothing to lose.

The Headhunters collected three Freestyle titles with Jacob Naylor (126 pounds), Damian Manna (138), and Jake Jones (150/157).

Naylor doubled down with a Greco Roman gold when he won by technical superiority, 8-0 (:59), over Owen Vallowe (Get Fit Wrestling Club). Naylor’s Freestyle glory came with a 10-0 tech in 28 seconds of Abdulaziz Abduraimjonov (Winter Mill). As a refresher, an eight-point margin is needed for a tech in GR, ten for FS.

Manna won a 5-2 match with another Headhunter, Evan Durand, that placed them in the one and two spots. We are referencing the matches that occurred randomly in some of the round robin weights, but regardless of when they happened, they were the “finals”. Jones teched The Compound’s Anthony Benitez Diaz on a 10-0 count in 1:27.

Amir Cartwright was a double champ after winning a best of three encounter with Isabella Rutherford at 165 pounds on a tech fall and forfeit. Cartwright’s Greco glory came against Benitez Diaz and ended their best of three with two techs in a row, 8-0 and 10-0.

At 94 pounds, Chase Warm collected two crowns against different dudes. The American Dream grappler dropped an 11-0 tech on Cole Vaught (Mavericks Wrestling) in Freestyle. Greco was best of three with Warm sweeping Cole Pollard (VA) on back-to-back 8-0 tallies.

Two big boys got to sit around and socialize as the Freestyle and Greco Roman brackets for the Maverick’s Dempsey Moss (215 pounds) and TRC Cadets’ Josh Dennis (285) showed them to be the lone occupants so four golds were collected without breaking a sweat.

Two more Marylanders locked down Greco Crowns, Youssef Rahim (Capital Wrestling Club) and Chad Votta (unattached). Rahim stuck Isaiah-Chase Washington, 3:52, for the 120-pound title. Votta (144/150) put together an 8-0 tech of Damian Manna in 45 seconds.

The final 16U Champ hails from Delaware in Jade Uhde, who slayed two of our top middle school kids, Headhunters’ Matthew Tawney in Freestyle and Kyle Link in Greco. Uhde was second at the DE states this year.
